"The few months of loss in reading skills compounds over the years; by the time children reach middle school, those who haven't read during the summers may have lost as much as two years worth of achievement" (Helping to Prevent Summer Reading Loss).
For reading and writing, we will be using the workshop model. You will work on writing genres such as argumentative, informational, and narrative. We will also extend our vocabulary with proper spelling in addition to our knowledge of grammar. We will become stronger readers by practicing with “just right” books independently, with groups, and as a class. We will also work on citing textual evidence in our responses.
In Social Studies, we will actively learn and participate in our nation’s history while exploring Colonial America and the pre-revolutionary war eras. Additionally, we will further our knowledge of our country’s states and capitals.
Once the school year begins, you will be able to check this web-site for extended learning opportunities, announcements, homework assignments, and e-editions of assignments. Make sure you read over the summer to maintain all of the hard work you put in during 4th grade!
